The world’s deepest sinkhole was discovered and you won’t believe how large it really is
Till now you might have thought that Dean’s Blue hole in the Bahamas was the world’s deepest sinkhole, well you’re wrong because the world has a new sinkhole that can claim the title of being the largest and deepest. The world’s deepest sinkhole has just been discovered in The South China Sea.
The sinkhole in China is 300 feet deeper than the Dean’s Blue hole in the Bahamas and measure 987 feet in depth as compared to Dean’s hole that measures about 663 feet. Discovered on July 22nd this year by Chinese researchers. It has generated much interest among scientists and deep sea divers alike.
1 The Dragon hole is so deep; The London’s shard would easily fit into it
The new sinkhole was named the Dragon Hole and is almost the height of a 1003 ft skyscraper in London named the Shard. It is located near the disputed Parcel islands also known as Xisha in the South China Sea. The measurements of the sinkhole were done by underwater robots, deep sea cameras and sonar scanner which found the depth to measure exactly 987 feet.
The width of the sinkhole is 426 feet at the entrance and 118 feet at the bottom. What has amazed scientists is the 20 new marine species found in the caves.
