Our dogs surprise us with their unconditional love and devotion, which we profess. There are numerous cases when they have rescued people in danger and saved lives. In this article, we have compiled some moving stories that describe different dogs in different situations.
In January 1925, the doctors realized that a deadly diphtheria epidemic was about to affect young people of Nome, Alaska. The only drug that could stop the outbreak was in Seattle, Washington, 1,600 miles away. The single engine airplane that could deliver the drug was frozen and would not start. After considering all alternatives, the authorities decided to bring the medication through various dogs relay. The drug was taken by the train from Anchorage to Nenana, where the first sled was formed to deliver medication to Nome. Over 20 sleds participated, facing a blizzard with -31° C temperatures and strong winds. On February 2, 1925, the Norwegian Gunnar Kaasen led his team, guided by the dog Balto. Balto demonstrated that he perfectly knew the route, saving his team in the Topkok river. Balto was also able to stay on track in complete disorientation. Kaasen said he could barely see the hand in front of his face. Balto made the route in almost total darkness. In Nome, everyone wanted to thank Kaasen for his effort, but he said Balto deserved it more than him.
